Architectural Concept: “Was Kommt aufs Dach?” “what shall I put on the roof?”.
Roofs and coverings grow impressively in heights and they often create anonymous sky-lines. These repetitive roofs have the unexpected potential of creating unpredicted green landscapes. In this project, presented to a German competition, a green landscape animates the roofs of the buildings, infiltrates in the cracks of the houses, and supports new functions in an alternative space; therefore, golf clubs, parks, and playgrounds become new elements of urban and building design.

Engineering and Green Solution: The blocks are made of polystyrene modeled by numeric control tools, allowing for an easy installation on existing covering and providing the possibility of creating artificial mountains, hills and lakes without loading the structure below. The system is designed by assembling 4 x 4 feet modules, to be positioned on a polymeric frame that allows wiring and easy installation of the polystyrene panels. The polystyrene is the perfect solution because it’s light, resistant to compression, and can be easily shaped to satisfy aesthetics needs and to include irrigation and drainage solutions. The grass will be installed on top of the polystyrene. The final result is a light, easy to assemble, flexible and industrialized solution. This project represents a challenge to the concept of flat roof and of covering as an additional element that reconsiders the roof in its relationship with the residents and the cities. The covering becomes a green three-dimensional surface that can establish dynamic relationships with the architecture, with the surroundings, with the change of season, and with residents.

The project doesn’t provide pre-built solution, but it offers a method, so that everyone can fully customize its own space …and not only the apartment interior.
